About Subitec GmbH Stuttgart, Germany, Sustainable Biotechnology - Resources from Microalgae

Subitec GmbH was founded in 2000 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial and Biotechnology (IGB). In the run-up to the founding, scientists at IGB had already been dealing with the subject of microalgae since 1995. In 2007, operational business was started and the first investors were sought after.

By means of a globally patented flat panel airlift photobioreactor, algae biomass can be cultivated on an industrial scale using solar power. By means of the FPA reactors, a large number of valuable substances can be obtained from the microalgae, such as e.g. fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, carotenoids and colorants, which are used as raw materials in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. As well as the obtaining of high-priced substances, the technology also allows the use of algae biomass for energy purposes. For this, Subitec developed integrated circulating processes: the CO² needed to cultivate the algae, comes from industrial processes. The closed system allows circulation of water and nutrients, and the concept of the biomass refinery makes it possible to utilise the algae biomass in its entirety.

With the useful substances for the cosmetics and food additives industries Subitec is currently addressing dynamic growth markets. Collaborations with big-name energy companies are already opening up access to the globally increasing energy market.

Our business activity centres upon the marketing of the technology platform and the performance of order production.

The Subitec Team managed by Dr. Peter Ripplinger currently consists of five employees.
